FASTag is a device that employs Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for making toll payments directly from the prepaid account linked to it. It is affixed on the windscreen of your vehicle and enables you to drive through toll plazas, without stopping for cash transactions. With
the help of a FASTag, you will not have to stop your vehicle at toll plazas to pay the toll.FASTag is presently operational at 180 toll plazas across national and state highways.
The system was initially set up as a pilot project in 2014 on the stretch of the Golden Quadrilateral between Ahmedabad and Mumbai.
The system was implemented on the Delhi - Mumbai arm of the Quadrilateral on 4 November 2014.
In July 2015, toll plazas on the Chennai - Bengaluru stretch of the Golden Quadrilateral started accepting FASTag payments.
By April 2016, FASTag was rolled out to 247 toll plazas on national highways across India, representing 70% of all toll plazas in the country at the time.
By 23 November 2016, 347 fee plazas out of 366 on national highways across the country accept FASTag payments.
On 1 October 2017, the NHAI launched a FASTag lane in all 370 toll plazas under its ambit.
On 8 November 2017, it was followed up by making FASTag mandatory on all new vehicles sold in India after December 2017.
On 19 October 2019, it was announced that FASTag will be mandatory on all National Highways from the 1st of December 2019 and non-FASTag users will be charged double the toll.
Saves Fuel and Time - FASTag is read by the tag reader at the plaza and the toll amount is deducted automatically when the vehicle approaches the toll plaza. The vehicle with FASTag doesn't need to stop at the toll plaza for the cash transaction.
SMS alerts for transactions - Customer will receive SMS alerts on his registered mobile numbers for all the transactions done in his tag account.
Online recharge - Customer may recharge his tag account online through, Credit Card/ Debit Card/ NEFT/ RTGS or Net Banking.
No need to carry cash - Customer doesn't need to worry about carrying cash for the toll payments.
Web portal for customers - Customers can access their statements by logging on the FASTag customer portal.
Cash-back offer - Avail 2.5% cashback on all toll payments made through FASTag for the FY 2019-20.
How To Buy FASTag?
FASTags are issued by 22 certified banks through various channels such as Point-of-Sale (POS) at National Highway toll plazas and select bank branches. They are also available on a various e-commerce platforms such as Amazon.
FASTag issued by certified banks can charge a maximum of Rs 100 for each tag, which is fixed by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). However, the actual tag issuing charges are defined by the bank and may vary from bank to bank.
How to recharge FASTag?
FASTags can be recharged through net banking, debit card, credit card, NEFT or RTGS. Once a vehicle owner acquires a FASTag, he/she will need to feed in the details of their vehicle on the MY FASTag mobile app. It must be noted that a FASTag has a validity of five years. The minimum
amount for recharge of FASTag is Rs 100 and the maximum is Rs 1 lakh. Users who have not completed their KYC will not be able to recharge their FASTag account with more than Rs 10,000. Users who have completed their KYC can add up to Rs 1 lakh. Vehicle owners must note that one FASTag can only be used for one vehicle.
You cannot use one FASTag with two or more vehicles, you will have to buy two separate FASTags for the two vehicles and so on.
As per the IHMCL website, "If you reside within a range of 10 km from the toll plaza, you can avail a concession on toll to be paid via your FASTag. In such a case, you need to submit the required documents - proof of residence at the bank, nearest POS location to validate that your residential address is within 10 km of a particular toll plaza. Once the address is verified, you can avail a concession on the toll paid via FASTag assigned to your vehicle."
What documents are required?
Customer needs to submit a copy of the following documents along with the application for FASTag:
1. Registration Certificate (RC) of the vehicle.
2. Passport size photograph of the vehicle owner
3. KYC documents as per the category of the vehicle owner (viz. Individual / corporate):
For Individual: ID proof and Address proof from the list mentioned and 1 passport size photograph.
Voter ID Card
Aadhar Card (with address)
For instance, a valid driving license would be sufficient for Address & ID proof.
For Corporate customers and other details please visit the web site of the participating banks/issuer Agency.
(i) The issue of FASTag is subject to verification of original documents mentioned above by the issuing agency.
(ii) Customers are advised to bring originals of the above documents while visiting PoS for the purchase of FASTag.
(iii) The FASTag will be fixed on the vehicle’s windshield by the representative of the Issuer Agency only.
(iv) Any representative of the vehicle owner can provide the above documentation and information and purchase the FASTag.
