Nirbhaya case convicts were sent to the gallows after much delay on Friday at 5:30 am. A case that shone a global spotlight on shocking rates of sexual assault in India. Akshay Thakur, Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, and Vinay Sharma were hanged at a jail in the Indian capital on Friday, March 20, after more than six years being convicted of raping and killing the woman, known only as "Nirbhaya."
Here is the chronology of events in the Nirbhaya case which are stated as follows -
On Dec16, 2012, a Paramedical student gang-raped and brutally assaulted by six men in a private bus and thrown out of the moving vehicle along with her male friend. The victims admitted to Safdarjung Hospital.
On Dec 18, Police identify the accused - bus driver Ram Singh, his brother Mukesh, Vinay Sharma and Pawan Gupta.
On Dec 20, the Victim's friend gives a statement.
Dec 21: Delinquent juvenile nabbed from Anand Vihar bus terminal in Delhi. Victim's friend identifies Mukesh as one of the culprits. Police conduct raids in Haryana and Bihar to nab the sixth accused, Akshay Thakur.
Dec 29: After 12 days of fighting for her life, the victim or 'Nirbhaya' dies from the effect of her injuries. Police add murder charge in FIR.
Jan 2, 2013: Chief Justice of India, Late Altamas Kabir inaugurates fast track court (FTC) for speedy trial in sexual offence cases.
Jan 3: Police file charge sheet against five adults accused of murder, gang rape, attempt to murder, kidnapping, unnatural offences, and dacoity.
Jan 17: FTC starts proceedings against the five adult accused.
Jan 28: Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) says a minority of juvenile accused is proved.
Feb 2: FTC frames charges against five adult accused.
Feb 28: Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) frames charges against the minor.
Mar 11: Ram Singh commits suicide in Tihar Jail.
Jul 5: Inquiry (trial) in the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) against the juvenile in concludes. JJB reserves verdict for July 11.
Jul 11: JJB holds minor also guilty of illegally confining and robbing a carpenter on December 16, the night before allegedly taking part in the gang rape.
Aug 22: FTC begins hearing final arguments in the trial against four adult accused.
Aug 31: JJB convicts the minor for gang rape and murder and awards three-year term at a probation home.
Sep 3: Fast track court (FTC) concludes trial. Reserves verdict.
Sep 10: Court convicts Mukesh, Vinay, Akshay, Pawan of 13 offences including gang rape, unnatural offence and murder of the girl and attempt to murder her male friend.
Sep 13: Court awards death penalty to all the 4 convicts.
Sep 23: High Court begins hearing the convicts' death sentence reference sent to it by the trial court.
Jan 3, 2014: High Court reserves verdict on convicts' appeals.
March 13: HC upholds the death penalty of all the 4 convicts in the case.
Mar 15: Supreme Court stays execution of 2 convicts, Mukesh and Pawan after they file appeals. Later, stays execution of other convicts also.
Apr 15: SC directs police to produce the dying declaration of the victim.
Feb 3, 2017: Supreme Court says it would hear afresh the aspect of awarding death penalty to the convicts.
Mar 27: SC reserves verdict on their appeals.
May 5: SC upholds the death penalty awarded to the 4 convicts and says that the case falls under the 'rarest of rare' category.
Nov 8: Mukesh Singh files a review petition in the SC against the capital punishment awarded to him.
Dec 12: Delhi Police opposes Mukesh's plea in SC.
Dec 15: Convicts Vinay Sharma and Pawan Kumar Gupta move SC for review of its verdict.
May 4, 2018: Supreme Court reserves order on review plea by two condemned convicts--Vinay Sharma and Pawan Gupta.
Jul 9: Supreme court trashes the pleas of all the 3 convicts.
Feb 2019: In order to get death sentences issued for the convicts in the case, victim's parents move the Delhi court.
Dec 10: Akshay Kumar Singh, one of the convicts in the case files a review petition with the SC against the death penalty.
Dec 18: Akshay's plea gets rejected. Delhi court directs Tihar jail authorities to issue notices to convicts to utilize the legal remedies left at their disposal.
Delhi govt seeks death warrants for the execution of death sentence to the 4 convicts.
Dec 19: Delhi HC dismisses the plea of Pawan Kumar Gupta claiming he was a juvenile at the time of the offence.
Jan 6, 2020: Delhi court dismisses complaint filed by Pawan's father seeking FIR against sole witness.
Jan 7: Delhi court issues death warrants against the convicts for hanging on Jan 22 at 7 am in Tihar jail premises.
Jan 14: SC junks curative petition of Vinay and Mukesh. Mukesh files mercy plea before President.
Jan 17: Tihar jail authorities seek a fresh date for hanging. Feb 1 at 6 am decided as the date and time of execution.
Jan 25: In an attempt to save himself, Mukesh moves SC against the trashing of mercy plea.
Jan 30: SC dismisses the curative petition filed by Akshay.
Jan 31: SC quashes Pawan Gupta's plea that sought review of the rejection of Gupta's juvenility claim.
Feb 5: HC dismisses Centre's plea against trial court order; says all 4 convicts have to be hanged together.
After repeated rounds of petitions being filed and rejected, the SC trashed the curative petition filed by Pawan Gupta on March 19 and held an unprecedented late-night hearing on the case.
Pawan Gupta's plea against the rejection of his second mercy petition was dismissed during this late-night hearing.
On March 20, all the four convicts in the case were hanged at 5:30 am.
